There are technically more steps (you have to go through a MIDI-USB adapter most of the time), but the speed of each step is much faster. For the most part, input (from you on your keyboard) is always fast. There is no synthesis going on, so it's just whatever hardware you have delivering a 3-byte ...

Doesn't it create additional delay since it's a two-way solution? I mean, you have Synth (input) ---> Soundcard (output) ---> Synth. Or am I getting it wrong? :)
