What kinds of MIDI files do you want?

Share your original or public domain compositions here!
Request popular music with the suggestion form on the music store, not here!

All MIDI attachments must be one of the following:
  • Your own, original work submitted under some license that permits free private use (I recommend public domain or Creative Commons).
  • Adapted from works created prior to 1923. This goes for both the composition and arrangement. This means you cannot post MIDI versions of recent songs.

Hey Everybody!

We need your input on what kinds of MIDI files you want. It takes effort to get files that are legal so it would be good if we could direct that effort to things people want.

I notice that "The Maple Leaf Rag" has gotten more downloads than "Ain't Nobody's Business". Do people want MIDI files that are piano only rather than files where you play a keyboard part with a band? Good news if you do because there are more sources for the former.

What level of difficulty are you looking for?

Are you more interested in instructional and graded music or music that is fun to play?

We may be able to license some popular music, i.e. things that are current hit songs, but that is going to take some effort and investment of money. These files would be downloads for purchase. Is there enough interest in such things to make it worth pursuing?

Synthesia without content is like a day without sunshine. Help us brighten your day by letting us know what type of content you are interested in.

I for one am mostly looking for Christmas songs, piano versions. Preferrably of higher difficulty (not sure I could play them, but at least for the future.) I find the easy piano versions are kind of flat. Most of those songs are pre-1923, I think. Not fond of jazz versions of the classical Christmas songs, at least not the religious ones.

Well, I'd like to see songs that will help me grow as a piano player.
Simple enough to play. Not tons of huge hops and quick passages and streeetching.
But also that'll sound good with no accompaniment.

Backing drum tracks instead of a metronome.
Backing tracks of other instruments is good, but NOT if
the song RELIES on backing tracks to sound good.

Also, like you mention, simple songs with a single note melody line and chords that
you can re-arrange/improvise on toppa.

In fact, maybe a series of midi files of the SAME song with progressively nicer
arrangements would be MOST awesome ;)

I think that is a really good suggestion Steve... Might be a little tough to get our hands on
but a great suggestion... Like Billy J's The Piano Man ... From easy to crazy skills...

or La Companella (Liszt) - For middle weight players want a challenge to
the full monty for 20 fingered pianists. Or for that matter Liszt's Hungerian Rhapsody...

I will upload a couple of copyright free midi's of Liszt and see if any benevolent Piano Demi god
can make us some simple arrangements.

liszt-hungarian-rhaps-No2GREAT.mid
If I try hard and apply myself I might be able to play this in 15-20 years

La campanella liz_et.mid
This blows my mind everytime I hear it. Enjoy.

I can play Billy Joel's "Piano Man" :)
from this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Classic-Rock-Note ... 0634054090
It's an exact transcription and has harmonica accompaniment in there, too.

It's not TOO tough, but pretty looooooong.
And although it's a KIND of simple song, there are toooons of variations in the
bass chord chord accompaniment. And some tricky solo-ish parts.

But I'd say that song is pretty much the piano equivalent of guitar's "stairway to heaven"
Oh, you play piano??? Do Piano Man!!

But for THIS forum, I'd like to see starting with something DEAD simple and adding
more and more complex arrangements.
By some piano teacher-ish dude/gal who'd like to be famous for
enriching hundreds of lives at ONCE right here right now!

On (the awesome) http://pianoworld.com forums (which you should already be a member of!),
there are threads on this sort of thing. But not so many
CONCRETE MIDI FILES :(

People on pianoworld.com tend to be acoustic pianists and thumb their noses at digitals and midi :(
They TEND to be sheet music snobs and won't bother with midi.
Not that that's not ok. If you've got those skills, then GOOD FOr YOU.

But I think midi is a better format than sheets(.png/.pdf/etc) or paper.

Would be great if people could recommend good books. like the one stephenhazel mentions, with quality notation versions of popular rock/pop songs. Not with those easy piano watered down versions.

Hi Guys,

I am about to do something in the legal GRAY AREA...
But I think its fine cause there are no midis involved.

I have recently stumbled upon a website -

http://freepianoinstrumental.com/

Now whoever created it does piano instrumentals of popular songs for solo piano.
Don't know who it is but he/she has some brilliant versions of some great, very new, songs.

Sadly there is no midi versions so that is why I am happy posting the address. I think they make the
sheet music of their arrangements available, which doesn't help anyone who can't read music, like me.

I would really like to get someone like this to make our little midi club some cool arrangements for piano
of all the popular songs we would like to play... I am sure JimHenry can organize a license to make it all legal schmeagle.
But I suggest have a listen to a couple of songs and you'll see why I reckon it is so brilliant.

There is a piano solo version of Rhianna and M&M's "Love the way you lie" - its brilliant.
Its my hope that we have some people in this forum community that can do something like that. Fingers crossed.

The big copyright issue for popular songs is that the composer has a copyright interest. No matter how you get the MIDI file for that composition, you need a license from the composer to distribute that MIDI file. I think I have figured out how we can get the necessary licenses but it costs a modest amount of money and there is bookkeeping that needs to be done.

Here's a site with a free video tutorial of how to play Rhianna and M&M's "Love the way you lie". They are hoping to entice you to subscribe for more lessons but maybe this type of video tutorial will be what some of you are looking for.

There is an upside to my forgetfulness. Here is the link I intended to include:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jMhQxRfoZ0

Here's another link I found of video teaching you how to play "Love the Way You Lie" with Synthesia:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKeVV8UFk0Q

We are stretching the line we tried to draw regarding references to things where we have doubts about the licensing. Nicholas, are we getting out of your comfort zone?

That's Final Fantasy X's "To Zanarkand".
There are midis and sheets all over the web for it.
But you should probably learn from the (copyrighted and to pay for) sheets
Composed by Nobuo Uematsu
copyright 2001 Solid Co., Ltd. and Square Sounds Co., Ltd.

That rendition isn't impossible to play (It's in my rep:)

Hmmm, http://www.nobuouematsu.com/sheet.html and
http://www.nobuouematsu.com/sheet/piano/ff10_zann.zip
Zip has a readme.txt that impliiies that it's free for
personal use (not for an audience).
Not sure how "all legal and stuff" that is, but fwiw...
