Best is with private lessons from a qualified teacher.

Second best is class lessons.

Next best is to find a self-instruction course that appeals to you and stick with it diligently for at least 6 months before considering a change to a different course.

The common theme in all of these is motivation and discipline to practice regularly in a focused manner. The relative value of these methods is in no small part based on their ability to supply motivation and discipline.

Synthesia can be a valuable practice aid for any of these approaches to learning. Learn to create MIDI files, which isn't that hard, so you can make files for whatever you might need to practice.

If you give the name of the book, maybe someone here will have some experience with it. You are going to be spending a lot of time with whatever book you choose, so you want to have faith that it will take you where you want to go.
